An emerging youth-driven agriculture organization, Sons of the Soil Agrarian Organization (SOS-AID) has launched large-scale Aloe Vera production in Nimba County. Founded on August 9, 2021, by a group of passionate, certified young agriculturists, SOS-AID is making waves in the agricultural sector with its innovative and community-focused approach.
The organization’s latest initiative centers on the cultivation of Aloe Vera, a plant valued for its medicinal properties and historical significance. The herb has become a symbol of the organization’s mission to promote sustainable farming and self-reliance. By cultivating Aloe Vera, SOS-AID aims to offer both farmers and consumers a versatile crop that can improve health, nutrition, and income generation.
“Our goal is to empower young people through agriculture. We want to build financial and moral resilience while contributing to Liberia’s agricultural independence” said Marker Gbarwee head of the organization.
SOS-AID’s mission aligns with global initiatives such as the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Responsible Investment in Agriculture (RIA) and Inclusive Business Model, which promote collaboration across the agricultural value chain to eliminate hunger. The organization also draws inspiration from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by prioritizing food security and sustainable farming.
The organization envisions a future where Liberia becomes self-reliant in food production and less dependent on foreign aid. The focus on Aloe Vera production is part of a broader plan to diversify Liberia’s agricultural offerings, strengthen food security, and build a more resilient farming system.
As SOS-AID continues to expand its initiatives, the organization has called on the government and other stakeholders to support its efforts in creating a thriving, sustainable agricultural sector in Liberia.
