Chairperson of Poultry Farmers in Bong Lauds RETRAP Interventions

By Adam Togba, LMDI C4D Project

Gbarnga City, Bong County, Central Liberia: Tryphaina’s Poultry and Farm in Gbarnga City, Bong County, has emerged as a leading example of agricultural success in Liberia. Under the leadership of Miss Tryphaina Nyahn, the farm boasts 1,800 chickens and a thriving vegetable production venture, making it one of the largest poultry farms in the country.

Tryphaina’s journey to success took a significant turn when she and other poultry farmers in Bong County received support from the Government of Liberia’s Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP). Implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture Liberia – MOA Liberia and funded by the World Bank, RETRAP provided the farmers with 2,000 chicks and essential chicken feed. Tryphaina described this intervention as a game-changer, especially in enhancing the multiplication of chicks.

As the CEO of her farm and the head of poultry farmers in Bong County, Tryphaina expressed her gratitude to RETRAP for its contribution to the progress of poultry farming in the county. However, she emphasized the need for additional support, particularly in training and capacity building, to further enhance productivity and growth.

One of Tryphaina’s unique skills is her ability to produce chicken feed, setting her apart in Liberia. She expressed the need for support to expand this facet of her operations, aiming to provide affordable feed options for her birds and fellow poultry farmers. “I need support to produce chicken feed at a lower cost. It’s expensive, but I want to make it affordable for everyone,” she said.

Madam Deedee F. C. Cooper, a County-Level Facilitator of RETRAP in Bong County, highlighted the project’s vision of supporting smallholder farmers and agribusiness SMEs in various value chains, including poultry, in Liberia. She commended Tryphaina’s Poultry and Farm and other beneficiaries in Bong County for their progress and willingness to share knowledge and experience, fostering a strong community spirit.

For the poultry value chain in Liberia, Tryphaina’s Poultry and Farm serves as a testament to the transformative power of strategic interventions. With RETRAP’s support, Tryphaina and her fellow farmers are not only raising birds but also sowing the seeds of knowledge and sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring the availability of unfrozen chickens in Liberia.
