As part of an ongoing effort to strengthen environmental sustainability and increase stewardship in forest-dependent communities, the National Union of Community Forestry Development Committee (NUCFDC) has announced the expansion of its sustainable forest management initiatives to eleven of Liberia’s fifteen counties.

In an interview with the Liberia Agricultural and Environmental Journalists Network (LAEJN) recently Andrew Zelemen, Head of the Secretariat and National Facilitator of the NUCFDC, disclosed the development during a recent statement, highlighting the union’s unwavering commitment to enhancing both environmental stewardship and socio-economic opportunities for residents in forested regions.

According to Zelemen, the NUCFDC’s expansion is part of a strategic plan to empower communities through inclusive representation in forest governance. “Our goal is to amplify the voices of people living in forest concession areas, ensuring that both government and corporate entities deliver the benefits due to them,” he said.

Zelemen voiced out that the union is not only focused on forest preservation but also on broader community development.

With support from the Liberian government, the NUCFDC is initiating innovative projects aimed at delivering clean water, sustainable electricity, and agricultural investment to improve livelihoods.

Additionally, Mr. Zelemen lauded the Government of Liberia for its historic financial commitment to the forestry sector.

He commended President Joseph Boakai for allocating 92% of the forestry sector’s appropriation in the 2024 fiscal year budget to the NUCFDC—a level of support never before seen in previous administrations.

“We are truly grateful,” Zelemen said. “This is the first time the union has received such a high level of commitment from the government. It’s a milestone for forestry and community development efforts.”

Founded in 2009, the NUCFDC was established to represent the interests of residents in forest-rich areas, advocating for equitable sharing of forestry benefits.  The union currently operates in seven counties, working closely with 23 community forestry development committees (CFDCs).

With the planned expansion, it aims to deepen its footprint and impact in additional counties. Zelemen’s remarks underline the critical role that community-based organizations play in Liberia’s natural resource governance.

He reaffirmed NUCFDC’s dedication to creating sustainable and inclusive development models that place local communities at the heart of forestry decisions.

Liberia is currently navigating its path of sustainable development, the NUCFDC’s work serves as a shining example of how grassroots empowerment, environmental protection, and strong government partnerships can work hand-in-hand to drive positive change.
