Bong County, Liberia – Emmanuel Tokpah, Chief Executive Officer of Ma-yah Kernel Processing Business Incorporated, has emphasized the crucial role of market sites in enhancing kernel production nationwide. Established in 2022, the Ma-yah Kernel Processing Center aims to add value to kernel production and provide employment opportunities for local palm producers across Bong County.

Tokpah highlighted the significant contribution of kernel products to Liberia’s agricultural sector, stressing the urgent need for robust support from the Liberian government, particularly through the Ministry of Agriculture. The cooperative has forged strong partnerships with small palm manufacturers since its inception, fostering prosperity in rural communities through collaborative efforts with government agencies.

“Ma-yah Kernel Processing Business Corporation stands as a beacon of success in farmer-government collaboration, driving growth in rural Liberia,” Tokpah remarked. Despite the cooperative’s strides, Tokpah noted that inadequate government support and market infrastructure have hindered kernel production in the country.

Despite the substantial health benefits and rising demand for kernel oil, Liberia’s kernel production has been limited by challenges such as market access and lack of infrastructure to facilitate local trade. Tokpah believes that if market sites were better organized, it would significantly enhance the economic viability of the industry, benefiting both local farmers and the broader Liberian economy.

“The lack of proper market access is a major roadblock for small-scale producers,” Tokpah said. “With the right support from the government, we can not only increase production but also position Liberia as a key player in the global kernel market.”

Tokpah revealed that efforts are underway to expand Ma-yah’s operations across Liberia, but stressed that government support is crucial to unlocking the full potential of the kernel market.

He urged the government to take immediate action to improve market infrastructure and provide technical support to small palm producers to ensure long-term sustainability and economic growth.

As the world turns increasingly toward healthier and sustainable alternatives, Liberia’s kernel industry has the potential to be a significant economic contributor, provided there is an enabling environment and adequate investment from both the government and the private sector.

The cooperative’s efforts to improve and expand operations are part of a broader strategy to elevate Liberia’s agricultural landscape, with a focus on sustainable development and economic empowerment in rural communities.
