To enhance the work of community animal health workers, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has handed over 30 new Yamaha motorcycles along with laboratory and surveillance equipment to the Ministry of Agriculture in Liberia.

The donation, made possible through support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to enhance the work of community animal health workers across the country.

During a dedicatory ceremony on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in Gardnerville, USAID Mission Director, Jim Wright, noted that the donation is part of the “One Health” approach, designed to improve animal health and build a sustainable system.

According to him, in Liberia, community animal health workers play a critical role in providing essential services to animals and agricultural communities across the country.

Wright added that the motorcycles will significantly improve access to remote communities, allowing health workers to report and respond to disease outbreaks among animals more efficiently.

He also reaffirmed USAID’s commitment to supporting the Liberian Government in addressing critical animal and human health challenges.

Meanwhile, Assistant Agriculture Minister for Administration, Folton Blasin expressed gratitude to FAO and USAID for their continued support, noting that their partnership has enabled the Ministry to tackle animal health challenges significantly.

He assured the public that the motorcycles and laboratory equipment would serve as vital tools for transportation and connectivity, allowing livestock farmers to benefit from improved veterinary services.

โ€œThis donation represents more than just motorcycles; it symbolizes food security and progress. It is a testament to what we can achieve when we support one another. We are building a healthier community for both animals and their caretakers,โ€ he explained.

The Assistant Minister also stressed the Ministryโ€™s ongoing efforts to seek partnerships with other organizations to further develop the agricultural sector.

He urged community animal health workers to make full use of the donated motorcycles to enhance their work.
