Cestos City, River Cess County – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of Commerce, has launched a youth-led initiative known as the Cestos Eco-Brigade in River Cess County.
The launch ceremony, held over the weekend at Cestos City Hall, brought together local officials, community leaders, and more than 60 young volunteers who make up the first brigade team.
UNDP Program Coordinator Abraham Tumbey said the Eco-Brigade is designed to support the Cestos City Corporation in keeping the city clean while empowering young people to take the lead in environmental protection.
“The project will not only promote sanitation and environmental protection, but it will also create economic opportunities for young people,” Tumbey noted.
He disclosed that each volunteer will receive US$400 after 20 days of service, an incentive meant to motivate participants and sustain the program. Volunteers will carry out regular cleanup campaigns, raise awareness on waste management, and promote sustainable practices.
According to Tumbey, similar initiatives launched in Grand Bassa, Sinoe, and Grand Kru Counties have already delivered positive results in sanitation and environmental preservation.
Cestos City Mayor Mark Molton praised UNDP and its partners for extending the project to River Cess, describing it as inclusive and forward-looking. He highlighted the involvement of young people living with disabilities and encouraged all participants to see their roles as a civic duty.
“This is more than just a temporary job. It is a responsibility that can transform the face of Cestos City,” Molton told the volunteers.
The Eco-Brigade builds on ongoing environmental initiatives by the EPA in River Cess. Just two weeks ago, the agency established an 11-member Climate Change Working Group to educate coastal communities on the risks of climate change and ways to adapt. Members of the working group will also receive training under the new project to strengthen community outreach on climate change, waste management, and mobilization.
These interventions come as Cestos City and other coastal communities grapple with massive sea erosion that has destroyed crops and left residents increasingly concerned about their livelihoods.
With the combined efforts of the Eco-Brigade and the Climate Change Working Group, stakeholders hope to improve sanitation, strengthen community resilience, and mitigate the growing impact of climate change in River Cess County.
