NFAA Completes County-Wide Food Assistance Assessment Tour in Bong County

By Nathan Kollie

The National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) has completed a county-wide assessment mission in Bong County as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen food distribution programs benefiting schools and vulnerable institutions across the country.

The assessment, led by NFAA Director General Boakai  M. Sheriff, is part of a nationwide data-collection and coordination initiative intended to improve government-supported food programs targeting schools, orphanages, hospitals, correctional facilities, and other at-risk populations.

Director Sheriff said the tour is essential to understanding the challenges affecting food distribution and ensuring that assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries. “This assessment is part of our broader effort to collect accurate data and enhance coordination for food support programs nationwide,” he noted.

The NFAA, established in the 1970s by executive order, has undergone multiple restructurings over the decades, including reforms aimed at strengthening its role  and revitalizing Liberia’s food security system.

During the Bong County assessment, the NFAA delegation met with local authorities including County Superintendent Loleyah Hawa Norris, County Education Officer David Boakai, and Gender Coordinator Musu Mulbah. The meetings focused on reviewing the impact of food programs on school performance, community nutrition, and institutional welfare.

Sheriff disclosed that the agency recently received more than US$50,000 from the African Union (AU) to support food assistance initiatives across the country. He added that similar assessment missions have already been conducted in Grand Bassa County, with Lofa County expected to be the next stop.

Local authorities welcomed the visit, describing it as timely and crucial for strengthening service delivery. Superintendent Norris, Education Officer Boakai, and Gender Coordinator Mulbah jointly expressed appreciation for the NFAA’s engagement, noting that the outreach will help generate the information needed to improve food distribution efforts.

The NFAA says it remains committed to enhancing food security and improving the nutritional status of vulnerable populations in line with the government’s ARREST Agenda for inclusive development.
