Lofa County to Host 2026 National Agriculture Fair

By Thomas West

The Government of Liberia has announced that Lofa County will host the 2026 National Agriculture Fair, a move aimed at promoting agricultural development and showcasing the country’s vast farming potential.

The announcement was made by Agriculture Minister Dr. Alexander Nuetah during the just-ended two-day National Agriculture Fair held in Ganta City, Nimba County. Dr. Nuetah said the decision reflects government efforts to strengthen the agriculture sector and recognize counties making significant contributions to national food production.

“The selection of Lofa County reflects its strong contribution to national food production, particularly in key staple foods and cash crops,” Dr. Nuetah said.

He disclosed that the 2026 National Agriculture Fair, to be organized by the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), will prioritize three major commodities as part of the government’s broader strategy to boost agricultural productivity, improve food security, and increase farmers’ incomes nationwide.

“Our focus on these commodities is expected to encourage value addition, improve access to improved inputs, and expand opportunities for youth and women in agriculture,” the minister added.

Dr. Nuetah emphasized that the 2026 fair will serve as a national platform bringing together farmers, cooperatives, agribusinesses, development partners, and policymakers to exchange ideas on modern farming technologies and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Before Liberia’s civil conflict, Lofa County was widely regarded as the country’s food basket due to its high production of basic local food commodities. In recent years, however, that distinction has increasingly shifted to Nimba County, which has emerged as one of Liberia’s leading food crop producers.

The hosting of the 2026 National Agriculture Fair in Lofa County is expected to help revive its agricultural prominence while reinforcing the government’s commitment to revitalizing food production across the country.
