Salala, Bong CountyThe ECOWAS Commission, in partnership with the Tutumu Agriculture and Vocational Training Center, has successfully concluded a week-long agroecology training program for 150 young individuals in Salala District, Bong County. The training aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills in sustainable farming, including pig production, soil conservation, and climate-smart agricultural practices.

Director Prince Kromah stated that the training, held ahead of the center’s official reopening in March, was designed to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in various aspects of agriculture. The course covered topics such as pig production, soil conservation, farming practices, and climate-smart agriculture, all aimed at enhancing the participants’ capacity to contribute to the agricultural sector.

“This intensive training is a timely opportunity that will enhance both the skills of our students and the capacity of our trainers,” said Kromah. He added that the center would be an important educational and training hub in lower Bong County, where youth could acquire critical agricultural knowledge and practical skills.

The Tutumu Agriculture and Vocational Training Center is set to become a leading hub for agricultural education and technical training in the region. Kromah revealed that the center will offer courses in agroecology, modern farming techniques, animal husbandry, and agribusiness management, all designed to prepare youth for successful careers in agriculture. This initiative is expected to foster economic opportunities for young people, particularly in Bong and surrounding areas.

The initiative is poised to create economic opportunities not only for the youth in Bong County but also for surrounding areas. The ECOWAS Commission and the Tutumu Agriculture and Vocational Training Center are optimistic that the project will contribute to the development of the region’s agricultural capacity and empower the next generation of farmers and agribusiness professionals.

As Liberia seeks to revitalize its agricultural sector, young people are emerging as the key drivers of transformation, equipped with innovative skills and modern farming techniques. The recent agroecology training conducted by the ECOWAS Commission and the Tutumu Agriculture Vocational Training Center in Salala, Bong County, underscores the critical role of youth in advancing sustainable agriculture.

With agriculture serving as the backbone of Liberia’s economy, youth engagement in agribusiness and sustainable farming practices is essential for economic development by equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to foster job creation, improve food security, and transform agriculture into a viable career path.

The success of smallholder farmers has already demonstrated the potential for agriculture as a major source of income generation, and Liberia’s youth are well-positioned to lead the sector’s transformation toward greater productivity and sustainability.
