After the Rain Farmers Cooperative Launches Landmark Agricultural Project in Northern Liberia

By Samuel Borlay

Lofa County, Liberia:  In a bold step toward enhancing food security and economic empowerment in Liberia, the After the Rain Multi-purpose Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd has launched an ambitious agricultural development initiative in Gbandi Chiefdom, Lofa County. The project aims to transform 100 hectares of swamp land into a thriving center for sustainable agriculture.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. B. Augustine Sangalie, Chief Executive Officer of the cooperative, described the initiative as a catalyst for rural transformation. According to him, the project is expected to directly benefit over 500 smallholder farmers while creating more than 200 employment opportunities for local youth.

“Our vision is rooted in sustainability and empowerment,” said Mr. Sangalie. “This project will not only increase agricultural productivity but also uplift our communities by creating jobs and equipping farmers with the skills they need to thrive.”

The project is being implemented with support from the Ministry of Agriculture through the STAR-P (Smallholder Agricultural Transformation and Agribusiness Revitalization Project), which is designed to strengthen agricultural value chains and promote climate-smart farming across Liberia.

Local farmers and residents of Gbandi Chiefdom have warmly welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude to both the cooperative and the government for investing in their future. Many hailed the project as a turning point for agriculture in the region, offering hope for improved livelihoods and long-term food security.

We’ve waited a long time for such opportunities,” said one farmer. “This kind of support gives us the tools and motivation to grow not just crops, but also our communities.”

The community also commended the Government of Liberia for its ongoing commitment to agricultural development and rural empowerment. Stakeholders believe that the collaborative model between the cooperative and the Ministry of Agriculture could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives nationwide.

As implementation progresses, expectations are high that the project will bring about a lasting impact—setting a precedent for inclusive, sustainable agricultural transformation in Liberia.

With this groundbreaking venture, After the Rain Multi-purpose Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd is positioning itself as a leader in grassroots-driven innovation, charting a new course for Liberia’s farming communities and contributing to the nation’s broader development goals.
