More than 25 smallholder farmers in Kponyansonyea Town, Salayea District, Lofa County, have strengthened their knowledge of climate-smart agriculture following a three-day training led by the Development Education Network Liberia (DEN-L) under the European Union-funded Strengthening Community Actions for Land and Economic Security (EU-SCALES) Project.

The training, held from Wednesday, September 16, to Friday, September 18, brought together smallholder farmers and community members to build their understanding of improved and sustainable farming practices that can help communities adapt to changing climatic conditions, strengthen food production, and protect rural livelihoods.

The initiative forms part of the EU-SCALES Project’s broader efforts to strengthen community capacity, promote sustainable livelihoods, and enhance economic security in rural communities across Liberia.

The climate-smart agriculture training focused on equipping farmers with practical knowledge and approaches that can help them respond to climate-related challenges, including changing weather patterns and other factors affecting agricultural production.

Speaking during the training, J. Samuel B. Kplaiwru, Facilitator and Communication Officer of the EU-SCALES Project, emphasized the importance of ensuring that farmers have the knowledge and skills needed to adapt to changing agricultural conditions.

He encouraged participants to apply the lessons learned to their farms and share the knowledge with other farmers and community members who were not able to attend the training.

“The knowledge gained from this training should not remain with the participants. We encourage you to take what you have learned back to your communities and share it with other farmers,” Kplaiwru told participants.

Participants welcomed the training, describing the discussions as practical and relevant to their daily farming activities. One participant said the training provided new information that could help farmers improve their agricultural practices and respond more effectively to challenges affecting their farms.

For the more than 25 smallholder farmers who participated, the training provided an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of climate-smart agriculture and explore practical approaches to building more resilient farming systems.

The initiative underscores the importance of equipping smallholder farmers with knowledge and skills that can help them sustain agricultural production, strengthen household food and income security, and better cope with the impacts of a changing climate.

Through the EU-SCALES Project and its implementation partners, including DEN-L, communities in rural Liberia are being supported to strengthen local capacity, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and advance pathways toward greater economic and livelihood security.
