RESADE Launches Workshop to Transform Farmer-Based Organizations and Strengthen Local Cooperatives

By: Darius Zoryea

Buchanan — The Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) and the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA), in collaboration with the RESADE Project, have launched a three-day workshop in Buchanan to enhance Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs) and strengthen cooperative systems in Liberia.

Held under the theme “Improving Agricultural Resilience to Salinity Through Development and Promotion of Pro-Poor Technologies,” the workshop is funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA). Its goal is to equip participants with innovative tools and strategies to modernize FBOs and boost cooperative operations, fostering sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.

In an exclusive interview with Ablee-Jay Media, Dr. James Dolo, National Coordinator of the RESADE Project, emphasized that the initiative aims to reduce poverty, increase farmers’ incomes, and improve productivity. Dr. Dolo stated that the workshop would enable the CDA to elevate cooperatives to full operational status, allowing them to benefit from government and development partner programs. He also encouraged cooperatives to take the training seriously to enhance their capacity.

The workshop, concluding on January 29, brings together cooperative leaders, farmers, and policymakers to share best practices, address challenges, and chart a roadmap for sustainable agricultural development in Liberia.

Harris Winnie, Director of Programs and Projects at CDA, highlighted the workshop’s “Trainer of Trainers” approach, urging participants to return to their communities and share the knowledge gained.

Participants expressed enthusiasm about the program’s potential impact. Roseline Johnson, one of the attendees, pledged to transfer the knowledge to fellow farmers. Madam Nancy Bryant, another participant, called on the President of Liberia to prioritize agriculture as outlined in his ARREST Agenda. She advocated for the provision of modern farming equipment to ease the challenges faced by farmers.

The workshop reflects a broader commitment to empowering Liberia’s agricultural sector, strengthening cooperatives, and enhancing resilience to climate challenges. It underscores the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in building a sustainable and thriving agricultural economy.
