Gbarnga City, Bong County – On January 17, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with its partners, officially launched the harvest of a lowland rice farm managed by the Rice, Cassava, and Vegetables Producers and Processor Union of Liberia.

The farm, spanning over five hectares near Dolokelen Gboveh High School, is supported under the African Development Bank-funded Emergency Rice Production Offensive (ERPO) program. This initiative is designed to increase local rice production, reduce dependency on imports, and empower farmers through advanced techniques and resources.

The harvest ceremony was attended by government officials, local farmers, and representatives from agricultural organizations operating in Bong County. Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Alexander J. Nuetah, the Deputy Minister for Regional Development, Research, and Extension, Mr. Moses R. Gbanyan, underscored the Ministry’s commitment to supporting local farmers.

“Today marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to enhance food security in Liberia,” said Deputy Minister Gbanyan. “Investing in local rice production provides communities with affordable food, creates jobs, and fosters economic growth. Locally grown rice is not only healthier but also a step towards self-reliance in agriculture.”

He also emphasized the importance of tracking agricultural output to reduce reliance on imported rice, reaffirming the Ministry’s pledge to provide technical assistance and resources to farmers nationwide.

The Rice, Cassava, and Vegetables Producers and Processor Union of Liberia, under the leadership of Union President Rev. James Paye, expressed gratitude for the support from the Ministry and its partners.

“This harvest is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together,” said Rev. Paye. “We are committed to improving farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring food security for all Liberians.”

Local farmers present at the event expressed optimism about the future of rice farming in Liberia. They acknowledged the significance of the initiative, stating, “With the right support and resources, we can produce enough rice to feed our families and our country.”

Reports indicate that the Ministry of Agriculture and its partners will continue to support local farmers through training programs, access to quality seeds, and improved irrigation systems.

The success of this lowland rice farm serves as a model for future agricultural projects across Bong County and beyond. Initiatives like these are vital to achieving self-sufficiency in food production, building a resilient agricultural sector, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change and economic uncertainties.

This harvest event highlights the potential of Liberia’s agricultural sector to drive sustainable development and food security, inspiring confidence in the country’s journey toward agricultural self-reliance.
