As part of an effort to support the national quest of ensuring improved food security over the next few years, Mr. Whounhele Tokpah Wheeler, the General Manager of Kunian Farm has embarked on cultivating 50 acres of farmland in the Sinyan, Suakoko District, Bong County.
Kunian Farm is an Agricultural Cooperative operating in Bong County along the Kpatawee route engaged with cultivating both lowland and upland farms including Cassava production and poultry farming.
According to Mr. Wheeler, the project is part is meant to encourage Liberians to reconnect with agriculture and increase local food production. Mr. Wheeler’s commitment to agriculture comes at a crucial time when the country faces challenges related to food scarcity and reliance on imports.
The cultivation of huge farmland according to him aims to demonstrate the potential of local farming and inspire others to return to the soil, adding it’s about time Liberians return to the soil.
“We need to grow more food in Liberia,” Mr. Wheeler stated during a recent visit to the farm. “Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and it is essential for our nation’s self-sufficiency. We want to encourage every Liberian to embrace farming and understand its importance in our daily lives,” he added.
The 50-acre farm focuses on a variety of crops, including staple foods such as rice, cassava, and vegetables, which are vital for the local diet. Mr. Wheeler plans to implement sustainable farming practices to ensure that the land remains productive for years to come.
In addition to increasing food production, Mr. Wheeler’s initiative aims to create job opportunities for local residents, fostering economic growth from nearby communities including Jorquelleh District, Suakoko, and some parts of Margibi County.
The former Bong County Electoral District-3 representative candidate believes that by investing in agriculture, communities can thrive and reduce poverty levels, especially by addressing the efforts of local lowland farmers.
The cultivation of 50 acres of farmland in Sinyan Suakoko District, by Mr. P. Whounhele Tokpah Wheeler is setting a powerful example of how dedication to agriculture can lead to a more food-secure and prosperous Liberia.
In a related development, Mr. Wheeler therefore encouraged his fellow citizens to return to the soil and renew their interest in farming to further contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
“ I did General Agricultural at Cuttington University and I decided to come to the soil and buttress the Government’s efforts in solving some of the food crisis in our country” the Liberia farmer added “.
It seems that more Liberians are now considering returning to the soil to grow what we eat as our stable food, but this can only be achieved through a collective effort by both citizens and the National Government.
