-Liberia Vice President Convenes First Acquaintance Meeting of the National Food Security and Nutrition Steering Committee

Wednesday, May 8, 2024:  The Vice President of Liberia, Jeremiah Kpan Koung presided over the inaugural meeting of the National Food Security and Nutrition Steering Committee on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

The committee, comprising sector line ministers and government agencies, convened to discuss key initiatives and strategies.

As the National Chairperson of the Food Security and Nutrition Steering Committee and National Convener of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Secretariat, the Vice President led discussions on the Liberia Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Costed Strategic Plan (LMNCSP), launched by the government in December 2023.

This comprehensive five-year plan aims to combat malnutrition through enhanced government services and a multi-sectoral approach.

The meeting emphasized the government’s dedication to implementing the nutrition costed plan, with a focus on securing necessary funding through the national budget.

VP Koung announced plans for a subsequent meeting to delve deeper into the roles of various government ministries, agencies, and stakeholders in executing the LMNCSP.

Furthermore, VP Koung disclosed his intention to lead a delegation, including representatives from the SUN Secretariat and relevant stakeholders, to Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The visit aims to facilitate knowledge exchange on successful nutrition programs, leveraging insights from Sierra Leone’s experience with donors, INGO, and stakeholder support.

Key government bodies and organizations, including the Ministries of Finance, Public Works, Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agriculture, Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services, and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, contributed valuable input towards advancing the implementation of the LMNCSP.
